Ankeny
The original town site of Ankeny consisted
of eighty acres. This tract became the City of Ankeny was originally conveyed to John F.
Ankeny, after whom the town was named, July 11, 1874, by William Lewis and Sophia Lewis.
On April 22, 1875, Mr. Ankeny and his wife, Sarah A. Ankeny, filed the original plat of
the Town of Ankeny.
The town was legally incorporated by order
of the Polk County District Court on January 26,1903. It was on December 24, 1902, when H.
C. Goughnour and others filed a petition for incorporation with the Court. The election on
the incorporation was held on January 24, 1903. There were forty-four votes cast in favor
of incorporation and ten votes cast against.
Clive
Clive is an old community, but a young
city. Maps dated in the 1870's first show Clive as a small settlement clustered around the
intersection of Walnut Creek, a railroad and a county road. The community was an early
rail shipping point and coal mining area. It was platted on January 18, 1882 by the Union
Land Company. Three of Clive's first buildings still remain:
- Railway Depot at 86th Street and Swanson
Boulevard, built about 1882.
- Swanson Grocery, 8641 Swanson Boulevard (now
a private residence) built in 1911.
- Dobberthein Farm House, 8181 Harbach (now a
private residence) built about 1897.
The name Clive purportedly came from a
British General, Robert Clive, who served in the late 1700's as administrator and founder
of the British Empire in India. The City of Clive was incorporated on October 9, 1956.
